Western Power looks within to drive greater efficiency

Release Date: 05 June 2009

Western Power has embarked on an efficiency drive to deliver annualised cost savings to the business of $16m to enable it to direct more money towards upgrading and expanding the network.

The review into indirect costs within the business commenced four months ago and is expected to deliver significant savings from 1 July 2009.

Western Power Managing Director Doug Aberle said the two main recommendations of the review were to reduce Western Power's reliance on contractors and consultants, and to reduce the number of roles in some support functions across the business.

"The review focused on achieving greater efficiency within the business and improving productivity.  This is particularly important in view of the current economic climate," he said.

"Displaced employees will be redeployed to another role within the business where there is compatibility with skills and experience.  Where redeployment is not an option, employees will be provided a redundancy."

This initiative is expected to directly impact 38 employees and 32 contractors.

In addition, 40 positions that are currently vacant will not be filled, some by contractors who have recently completed their contracts and already left the business.

Overall 110 roles will be removed, however some of these are for part time positions.

"The program to achieve greater efficiency in the business is an ongoing, long term commitment aimed at improving productivity and achieving sustainable continuous improvement.

"The program connects to and supplements the wider strategic and cultural transformation activity currently underway at Western Power," Mr Aberle said.
