Your connection

Power is connected to your home in one of two ways:

  • Overhead service cables, which are owned and maintained by Western Power. Sometimes an extra, pole, known as a customer pole, is needed to raise the height of the service cable.
  • Underground connection between a green pillar and your meter box. The underground connection is installed, owned and maintained by the property owner in most residential areas. Where a new connection is required it is now mandatory to install an underground connection.

Customer poles

Shared customer poleCustomer pole used as span from power pole to residence too great.Customer or consumer poles are usually metal and are placed just inside the property boundary.  They are used to maintain the height of the service cable when:

the house/building is set back a long way from the street;
the house/ building is lower than the street; or the service cable would otherwise obstruct buildings and trees, or encroach on an adjacent property.

No service aerial available

The customer owns and maintains the pole.  If you wish to move, replace or remove your customer pole, please contact a licensed electrical contractor.

If the pole is shared with a neighbour, you will need to involve them in the process.

Radio, communication and television aerials and other equipment must not be mounted on this pole.
