Proposed construction timeline

May 2007 - November 2007 Pre-construction vegetation clearing, earthworks, and roads.
December 2007 Transformer to be delivered to site. Transformer dimensions are approximately 200 tonne, 11 metres long, 4.5 metres high and 3.5 metres wide.
November 2007 - November 2008 Construction Period

Sequence of events

Neerabup terminal substation site selection sequence of events

Mid 2003 Identified need for major terminal substation within the northern metropolitan area
April 2004

Identified the Neerabup area as the preferred location for the new terminal substation

September 2004 Project start – sites investigation begins
February 2005 A degraded site within the Gnangara pine plantation (previously a piggery) belonging to the WA Planning Commission determined as a preferred site
May 2005

Western Power begins negotiations with the WA Planning Commission – owner of the piggery site.  The Commission refers the proposal to the Infrastructure Coordinating Committee (ICC)

July 2005 Western Power advised that the ICC has given in-principal support for the proposal subject to there being adequate investigation prior to planning and that the appropriate environmental approvals are obtained
August 2005

Negotiations begin with the Department of Environment (DoE)

October 2005

DoE advised that the terminal substation was incompatible with the Priority One groundwater protection area, requesting that the site be moved outside of the P1 area

November 2005

Negotiations begin with the Department of Conservation and Land Management (Department responsible for State Forests) on the Ziatas Road site

May 2006

Agreement reached with CALM on the Ziatas Road site

October 2005 Stakeholder Reference Group (SRG) formed
October 2006 to February 2007 Four SRG meetings held
January 2007 Further to discussions with the Dept of Water, DPI, Local Member & Residents, a decision was reached to move the footprint of the facility, 40 metres further back from the edge of Ziatas Road,  to allow for better screening opportunities.
February 2007 Development application submitted
March 2007

Development Application approved by WAPC
