Western Power plans to construct a new zone substation at the corner of Mackay and Hazelhurst Streets in Kewdale as part of its electricity supply reinforcement program for the Kewdale, Belmont and Welshpool industrial areas.
Western Power is currently constructing a new zone substation on vacant land at the corner of Mackay and Hazelhurst Streets, Kewdale.
The project will provide additional power capacity to the Kewdale, Belmont and Welshpool industrial area to ensure reliable supply and to support forecast growth.
Two 132,000 volt (132 kV) transmission lines will be constructed between the new substation and the existing Belmont - Welshpool 132 kV transmission line on Abernethy Road. The connection will be carried out using six steel poles and four timber poles, all approximately 18 metres in height.
Civil works at the substation site began in April 2008 with levelling of the site and laying of foundations for the substation equipment completed in June 2008.
Undergrounding the existing 22 kV distribution lines along Hazelhurst Street and Mackay Street was completed in August 2008.
Erection of the steel transmission poles is scheduled to begin in October 2008, and will include the installation of pole foundations and stringing of the line. Completion of this work is expected in November 2008.
In addition, seven existing wood poles on the Belmont - Welshpool 132 kV line along Abernethy Road have been replaced with new wood poles. These new pole will allow for the installation of an overhead earth-wire as part of the network protection should a fault occur on the line.
Key elements of the project include:
| August 2008 | Undergrounding of distribution lines - completed |
| August 2008 | Removal of vegetation along Mackay and Hazelhurst Streets - completed |
| October 2008 | Erection of steel transmission line poles |
| December 2008 | Substation in-service |
