Western Power and Karara Mining Limited (KML), a joint venture company established by Gindalbie Metals Limited and steel producer Anshan Iron and Steel, are investigating options to upgrade the existing transmission line which runs from Eneabba to Koolanooka (via Three Springs), and extending to the Karara mine site.
The upgrade project involves the potential construction of a new 330kV 180-kilometre transmission line, mostly in the same corridor as the existing 132kV line, which it is intended to replace. The existing line would be removed once the new line is in operation. The project has been referred to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), which has determined the project "Not Assessed - Public Advice Given."
The proposed project is subject to Western Power and KML completing a commercial agreement for the funding, construction and operation of the project assets. The project is also subject to related WA State Government and Economic Regulation Authority approvals.
It is intented that the line and associated infrastructure will be available for use by other customers in the area, and will improve and strengthen the transmission network in the Mid-West region. This will ultimately enhance the reliability of power supplies to the community and businesses in the region.
